AP Open Question 1

  1. Carter, I really enjoyed the way that this essay was structured through the various answers that Heller provides for the central question in Catch-22. The idea that war is more often than not caused by deceit is something seen all throughout literature, as far back as The Odyssey which is what my second novel, The Penelopiad, is based off. Deceit tears down any walls of trust that had previously been up and shows how easily that lack of trust can cause conflict between groups and push them toward war. The impracticality and strangeness of such a phenomenon is something that you addressed very well and definitely a topic that could help for the AP exam if faced with a question about the effect of violence in societies.
